ALVAR AALTO - PAIMIO 41
Good condition with some signs of wear.
The Paimio armchair, designed in 1932, is also known as the Artek 41 armchair. It is made of bent plywood and wood (birch or natural lacquered beech).
It was designed as part of the overall project for the Paimio sanatorium, for the treatment of tuberculosis, directed by Alvar Aalto. His mission was to design the building, the furniture, and the lighting.
For the armchair, he wanted to use warmer materials than metal tubes, hence the wood and the wave (aalto = wave in Finnish) and also to use natural, Finnish materials.
It was this chair that would make him famous as an architect. It would be functional, aesthetically pleasing, and would take into account the patients' needs by facilitating breathing.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is also known for the Viipuri Municipal Library, the Villa Mairea, the Louis Carré house near Paris and the Finnish pavilions at the World's Fairs of 1937 in Paris and 1939 in New York.
In 1932, he created ARTEK to “sell furniture” designed by Alvar Aalto and to “promote the modern culture of living through exhibitions and other means”.
It is also famous for its patented L-shaped feet and its curved vase called the Aalto vase or “Savoy” vase.
