These four Fourmi chairs – model 3100 from Series 7 – were designed by Danish designer Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen. The seat is made of molded plywood, and the four-legged chromed tubular base is finished with black rubber glides.
Why the nickname "Ant"? Arne Jacobsen drew inspiration from the silhouette of an ant when designing it. Its slightly curved backrest and narrow seat give it an organic and minimalist look.
This 3100 model was first conceived in 1952 for the canteen of the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.
A scandal in 1963 boosted his notoriety:
In 1963, a famous photograph of Christine Keeler, implicated in the Profumo Affair political scandal in the UK, shows her naked, sitting upside down on a Series 7 chair (a fake one, as it has a hole in it). This iconic image reinforced the aura of Arne Jacobsen's design and contributed to his global success.
Since 1966, the Fourmi design has evolved with different variations and become one of the best-selling chairs in the world. Today, it is ubiquitous in offices, schools, cafes, and museums worldwide.
