The Soft Pad Chair was designed by Charles & Ray Eames in 1969. It is a variant of the Aluminium Group Chair, created a little earlier, in 1958.
The idea behind the Soft Pad was to combine added comfort with the refined, minimalist aesthetic of the aluminum chair. The Eameses then introduced foam cushions integrated directly onto the aluminum frame, giving a new dimension to the original design: comfort.

In the 1970s, these chairs quickly gained popularity in corporate offices and design studios. They were particularly prized by architects and designers who saw them not only as a timeless design object, but also as an ergonomic work tool.
The Soft Pad Chair became an icon in the offices of major production studios in Hollywood, where filmmakers like Billy Wilder, a personal friend of the Eameses, owned one.
President John F. Kennedy also used one in his personal office.
Steve Jobs, a passionate fan of design and modern furniture, had a large collection of furniture by iconic designers, including the Soft Pad Chair.
The Soft Pad Chair has become a design classic for its comfort, timeless aesthetics, and ergonomics.
