CHARLES & RAY EAMES - La Fonda
Good condition, some signs of wear consistent with age.
The “La Fonda” bases hold a special place in the history of design.
In the 1960s, this "La Fonda" base was specially designed for the La Fonda del Sol restaurant, a luxurious Latin American restaurant located in New York, commissioned by Alexander Girard (designer and collaborator of the Eameses).
Alexander Girard wanted comfortable chairs, but above all, chairs with harmonious, rounded edges, as they would be used in a high-traffic area. The legs had to be silent and stable when moved across the hard floor. Finally, the backrest had to be the same height as the tabletop.
The classic tubular metal base was not suitable as it was too "sharp" for the location.
Charles & Ray Eames then created a base cast in aluminum, with soft, organic shapes, matched with a padded fiberglass shell, more enveloping than the original models.
"La Fonda" Feet:
-Polished or painted aluminum.
-Rounded and compact shape.
-Integrated floor pads.
-Suitable for public places (offices, hotels, restaurants).
The restaurant closed quite quickly, but the chairs survived: they are more durable than their original location!
Some chairs still bear a "La Fonda del Sol" label, which greatly increases their value for collectors.
In 2016, Herman Miller and Vitra (the official manufacturers) reissued some pieces with bases inspired by the La Fonda model, proof of their timelessness.
The case here is a simple orange case.
