GEORGE NELSON - CSS
Good condition, some signs of wear.
George Nelson (1908-1986) was the design director at Herman Miller from 1945. He therefore played an essential role in the dissemination of modernism in the United States, collaborating, in particular, with Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Girard.
His “storage systems” (modular storage systems) – often called CSS (Comprehensive Storage System) – were launched in 1959 and encapsulate his new approach to contemporary design:European modernism: George Nelson had studied the Bauhaus and the international movement. He adopted the idea of clean lines, lightweight metal structures and functional modularity.
The architecture: its system incorporates architectural construction principles such as pillars, shelves, and partitions. Its unique feature is the creation of "mini-architectures" within the house.
Post-war optimism: he wanted to combine practicality and aesthetics for new American interiors, where space was becoming more open (open plan).
The CSS library - How is it designed?
Upright system: the shelves are fixed onto vertical posts, which are themselves wedged between the floor and ceiling.
Interchangeable modules: possibility of adding shelves, closed cabinets, folding desks, drawers.
Scalability: the system is designed to adapt to the changing needs of a home or office (family growth, teleworking, etc.).
Customization: the choice of materials such as wood, laminate and metal allows for a combination of aesthetics, modernism, and functionality.
Unlike traditional, heavy, and fixed furniture, Nelson's systems are airy, flexible, and lightweight. It's a modular wall unit that integrates into the architecture of the home rather than remaining an isolated object.
It offers a modern vision of housing: rationality, flexibility, adaptation to contemporary lifestyles.
In the 1950s, this type of modularity was still rare, making it seem almost futuristic.
Nelson's Comprehensive Storage System had a strong influence on other designers:
Dieter Rams (Braun, Vitsœ 606 Universal Shelving System, 1960)
Poul Cadovius (Royal System, 1948)
USM Haller (Fritz Haller, 1965)
Later, many contemporary furniture designers (Muuto, Montana, String Furniture) took up this idea of evolving and reconfigurable furniture.
