The armchairs in Florence Knoll's "Parallel Bar" collection were created in the mid-1950s.
Florence Knoll, the American architect and designer, conceived these pieces to meet the specific needs of her interior design projects for so-called “modern” workspaces. She considered her creations as necessary “filler pieces”: the “meat and potatoes” of design, intended to complement the more sculptural works of designers such as Eero Saarinen or Harry Bertoia.
The design of the "Parallel Bar" chairs is characterized by simple, clean lines, reflecting the influence of the Bauhaus and its mentor, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The parallel metal structures supporting the seats and backrests lend a light appearance while ensuring sturdiness and functionality in any setting. This minimalist approach aimed to create timeless furniture, in harmony with the modern architecture of the era.
Florence Knoll, very modest about her own creations, often stated that she did not consider herself a furniture designer, but rather someone who filled the gaps left by others. This humility contrasts with the significant impact of her designs, which have become emblematic of mid-20th-century modernism.
The "Parallel Bar" chairs have been used in various prestigious projects, including the Rockefeller family offices in New York, designed by Florence Knoll in 1946.
Today, Florence Knoll's "Parallel Bar" chairs are still in production.
