GEORGE FRYDMAN
Good condition, some signs of wear.
This coat rack dates from 1955. It is made of solid oak wooden slats arranged on 2 profiled side uprights.
It has 6 practical and aesthetically pleasing coat hooks made of steel and wood blades.
This coat rack has a rather strange history: who designed it? Georges Frydman? Le Corbusier? Or Charlotte Perriand?
Indeed, it is commonly attributed to Le Corbusier. But it was Georges Frydman who designed it.
His story: Georges Frydman is a French designer born in 1924 in Mulhouse.
He was initially far removed from design, specializing in aeronautical modeling at Arts & Métiers – his first passions were science, aeronautics, and spatial geometry. His preferred drawings were of airplanes.
Meanwhile, his father, a tailor, was able to make a garment without taking measurements. Perhaps his appreciation for geometry stemmed from this paternal expertise.
Furniture and interior design came later, when he discovered the architect and designer Le Corbusier through his book "Le Corbusier ou le lyrisme des Temps Nouveaux" (Le Corbusier or the Lyricism of the New Times). It was a true revelation. He pursued architectural studies at the École des Beaux-Arts, which he had to interrupt because of… the war.
Once he had his diploma, he would build his own house in the provinces and design functional furniture inspired by the Bauhaus movement.
It was in 1954 that he founded his publishing company EFA for: Functional Equipment for Housing.
His style blends traditional materials and functional design, influenced by the Bauhaus movement.
His recognition came late but was glorified by the René Gabriel prize in 1966.
