JEAN PROUVÉ - GRAND REPOS
"Grand Repos" armchair designed in 1927, tubular structure in nickel-plated metal, seat, back and armrests upholstered in black leather.
Perfect condition.
The Grand Repos armchair was designed between 1928 and 1930. Only three examples are known to exist. The first is in the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the second in that of the Vitra Design Museum, and the third was sold by Artcurial in 2006.
It was first presented at the UAM exhibition in 1930. Then it furnished Jean Prouvé's own apartment until the war.
In 1980, the design of the Grand Repos was adapted by Jean Prouvé and then produced by the German manufacturer Tecta. This re-release was subsequently discontinued.
Today, this reissue has become rare and sought after by collectors.
Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) is considered an architect (even though he wasn't officially one), a designer, and an artistic metalworker (or metalworker). All of this took place in his workshop in Nancy. His preferred materials were wood and metal, and his style was industrial, creative, inventive, and sustainable! He designed furniture as well as housing structures. He is known as the "builder of emergency" because he participated in post-war reconstruction efforts. Like Auguste Perret, he was among those who provided high-quality, affordable institutional solutions.
This “Grand Repos” armchair was built for Jean Prouvé himself, for his personal use. It is said to have been produced in a limited edition of 1000!
