GRETE JALK - Sofa
Good condition.
Grete Juel Jalk is a designer born in Copenhagen in 1920, a female pioneer.
After secondary studies focused on languages and philosophy, she attended the Women's Design School from 1940 to 1943, then the Danish Design School. She graduated in 1946. She completed her training under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
From 1950 to 1960, she taught in the furniture department of the Design School, while also participating in the annual competitions of the Design Museum.
In 1953, she opened her own studio and drew inspiration from the work of Alvar Aalto and the Eameses to develop furniture made of curved plywood.
She collaborated with several publishers, including France & Son (renamed “CADO” under the leadership of Poul Cadovius from 1964). She then designed modular seats, sideboards and storage systems.
In parallel, she edited the magazine Mobilia (1956–62 and 1968–74) and in 1987 published a four-volume encyclopedia: Forty Years of Danish Furniture Design.
Grete Jalk was one of the few female designers of her time to achieve international success. She paved the way for other female talents in a field that had previously been very male-dominated.
In 1947, she designed for single working women an “autonomous hideaway” integrating a sofa bed, desk and storage in a single module.
Finally, his Watch and Listen Unit (1963) changed the purpose of TV furniture. No longer hidden away, but on the contrary, proudly displayed as functional decorative elements.
In 1974, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs entrusted him with the curatorship of a travelling design exhibition, whose foldable exhibition space was a great success in 25 countries.
Galerie Bikini is offering its three-seater bench for sale.
It dates from the early 1960s, in line with his experiments in molded plywood.
