Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) was a minimalist Danish designer who used natural wood.
One of his iconic chairs is this “Presidential Chair” or “The Debate Chair” (PP503), also simply called “The Chair”.
This chair became famous during the televised debate of September 26, 1960, between the two candidates for the presidency of the United States: John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Both men were seated in this version of the chair during the "battle" debate.
John F. Kennedy had back pain. Hans J. Wegner had the difficult task of finding comfortable solutions for this debate.
Thanks to Hans J. Wegner's set design (the armchairs and a simple desk), the simple beauty of the furniture, its ergonomics, its organic curves and its unfussy design, the debate was visually modernized and may have helped to vindicate the progressive candidate rather than the conservative Nixon.
The PP503 at that time acquired the nickname "The Chair"...
