MARCEL BREUER - WASSILY B3
Perfect condition.
The B3 chair (here in very good condition) was first designed in 1923 by Marcel Breuer, a Hungarian architect and designer. The B3 is also known as the "Wassily Chair". Why?
It's a nod to the constructivist painter Wassily Kandinsky, a friend of Marcel Breuer, who supposedly received one of the early versions because he loved its forms. But it wasn't Marcel Breuer who gave it that name (!?).
Its name was supposedly given 10 years later by the Italian manufacturer Dino Gavina, who reissued it and who knew this story.
Its chromed tubular steel frame is lightweight, readily available, easy to reproduce, and therefore inexpensive. The seat is upholstered in stretched canvas or leather. The B3 model is considered one of the first tubular steel chairs: Marcel Breuer employed industrial techniques with smooth, bent steel tubes, without any visible welds.
Why this stroke of genius? In 1923, Marcel Breuer was head of the Bauhaus metal workshop in Dessau and was out riding his bicycle (Adler). So what? He supposedly got the idea to use tubing for his furniture by looking at his curved handlebars!
This innovative idea marked a turning point in the history of furniture and opened the way to new design possibilities. In 1925, Eileen Gray (aged 51) was also a pioneer, along with Marcel Breuer (aged 21), in using metal in furniture.
The rights to the Wassily chair are now owned by KNOLL in New York.
