Pierre Guariche (1926-1995), born in Bois-Colombes, was a French designer who graduated in 1949 from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. A student of the artist René Gabriel, and later an assistant for two years to Marcel Gascoin, a decorator specializing in mass-produced furniture, Pierre Guariche left his mark on his era.
He was one of the designers nicknamed the “young wolves” of post-war furniture, along with Pierre Paulin.
It was in 1951 that he opened his agency in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, and became known for his lighting fixtures. His furniture, however, was distributed by the Parisian gallery MAI and STEINER.
This Tonneau chair, from 1953-54 and produced by Steiner, is also known as the Amsterdam chair. Its distinctive features are its black tubular metal base and bent plywood seat. This chair is an iconic piece by Pierre Guariche: simple materials, clean lines, and a 1950s look.
The use of bent plywood has not only allowed for more efficient production, but also for a wider distribution of designer furniture to the general public.
Why the name "Tonneau" (Barrel)?
The shape of the wooden seat is curved and enveloping like that of a barrel.
Today, the Tonneau chair is considered an icon of 1950s design, and original pieces are highly sought after by collectors.
