The Pumpkin sofa, produced by Ligne Roset in 2008, is a piece designed by the French designer Pierre Paulin, and conceived in 1971.
Originally, it was designed to furnish the private apartments of President Georges Pompidou at the Élysée Palace. What's fascinating is that Paulin wanted to break with the very traditional codes of official furniture by introducing more modern, organic, almost playful forms.
The name “Pumpkin” comes directly from its appearance: it has a round, generous, enveloping shape reminiscent of a sliced pumpkin. Paulin's idea was truly to create a seat that feels like a cocoon—comfortable, protective, and sculptural all at once.
After being somewhat forgotten for years, the Pumpkin was reissued in 2008 by Ligne Roset, who had previously collaborated with Paulin. Since then, it has become a contemporary design classic, with a strong presence in modern interiors and variations including armchairs, two-seater sofas, and three-seater sofas.
International recognition: The Pumpkin sofa has been awarded the Red Dot Design Award. This sofa is now part of contemporary design history.
