CHARLES & RAY EAMES QUADRIPOD CHAIR - Herman Miller edition
The Eames Quadripode chair was created from 1950 onwards for Herman Miller.
Its fiberglass shell is anthracite in color, and its base swivels. This model is a chair suitable for an office or dining table. They are in good condition.
This range of molded shells was originally “cheap” and mass-produced to appeal to a wide audience.
Why will this shell succeed the Eames chairs of 1945, which were originally made of plywood (LCW Lounge Chair Wood)?
In 1948, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a competition, and Charles and Raye Eames entered! Their challenge: to meet the needs of the post-war American middle class in terms of furniture, design, and (low) production costs. This is how they first presented this chair with a fiberglass or polyurethane shell – they finished second in the competition.
A key feature: the base is a four-legged design. It could have been different.

The plywood seats (1945) and then the fiberglass shells (1950) would be the path towards a completely new model: that of “The Chair” inspired by the artist Gaston Lachaise...
